Peter flew on to Rwanda for our first SOM in this country. Richard Willcox joined him in the capital, Kigali. Just 14 years after the Rwandan genocide in 1994, the Church there is alive and well.
The Sunday gathering was very exciting with Godfrey Gatete's church in a poor area of the city. Passionate, excited, committed people responded warmly to the ministry. One lady testified to an instant healing of a serious stomach complaint.
The SOM commenced on Monday with a group of aproximately 50 church leaders from Kigali, the more remote areas of Rwanda, and neighbouring Burundi gathered in Kigali for leadership and discipleship training for the first time. Godfrey Gatete, a remarkable and intelligent man, hosted the event in his church, built up over the past 5 years into a congregation of some 200.
The 2 subjects on Leadership combined well to challenge and inspire these hungry leaders reaching out to God. The focus of the teaching was to equip and train solid biblical truths as a foundation for the natural exuberance of the people. The joy and enthusiasm of those present, expressed in their whole hearted worship, was particularly touching, set against the backdrop of the poverty of their daily lives. The teaching was well received, in particular concerning the body functioning together and the importance of character. The result of the week is that they are looking for a full blown teaching programme to provide training for leaders in Rwanda which is not available anywhere in the country.
On the last day we were able to visit the Memorial to the genocide of 1990-1994. It was a moving and humbling experience to see what these people endured as 10% of the nation were butchered in those days.
